Thorn Nomad MK3 Touring Bike Frameset- Gunmetal
*In stock - 52L suitable for straight/sweep back bars
The Nomad Mk3 can be built with either derailleur gears or a Rohloff hub. It can be built with either drops or straight bars. The Nomad Mk3’s intended use varies between being a general purpose bike for day to day use in the real world, to being literally capable of providing reliable transport on a self-supported round the world tour, travelling on any roads or trails that wheeled transport is capable of negotiating - and short sections that no other vehicle could negotiate - because you can always carry your bike!
It can be built up into an absolute brute of a bike packing bike, using either 26" x 2.5"; 650 x 50-60b or 700 x 40c wheels, which will survive treatment that would certainly kill other bikes. Carrying an extra pound of steel in the frame is the cheapest, most effective insurance you can have!
All 8 of the frame’s tubes are highest quality - cold drawn, seamless, double butted and heat treated Thorn 969 tubing.THORN tubing is made from a billet of 4130 Cr-Mo steel which is then pierced (this is what makes the tubes seamless). The billet is repeatedly cold drawn, until it becomes a tube. It is then pulled through a mandrel, which makes it double butted (a double butted tube is one that is thicker at the ends where it is joined to other tubes, but thinner in the middle). The tubes are then heat treated which vastly increases the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of the steel, making them highly resistant to denting. The description of THORN tubing, for example 969, is an actual description of the thickness in mm of the wall of the three parts of the tube, ie.0.9mm at the end of the tube, 0.6mm in the middle of the tube and returning to 0.9mm at the other end of the tube. Experience has shown 0.8/0.5/0.8 is the thinnest gauge that can be built into a long-lasting frame. To give more strength and even more resistance to denting, thicker gauge (969) is used for the Nomad.
